BGF Planning Meeting - Summer 2012

I'd like to try using this blog as an on-line planning meeting discussion. Just add your questions and comments. I have it started. Maybe someone else can add something, such as a preliminary itinerary?

Thanks!

  1. Paul, I think you Dannielle, Lore, and Dan should meet in person on Aug. 5 at the bookstore you suggest, with me also joining by phone. Again, there are only 6 persons on this committee after Lore retires in September. To get 2 of you in person and one by phone in August is, in my opinion, the best you can hope for. Also, I understand that Lynn rarely accesses her e-mail. So, we are really down to a committee of five.

  2. The bookstore is only open until 6 on Sunday, and I'm usually busy Sunday afternoons. Let’s try August 5 (this Sunday) at 6:30 for a conference call.

But I really like the idea of using this blog. It eliminates the need to take minutes, avoids difficulties with hearing, and allows people to get up and go away for a while without losing any part of the discussion. Thanks, Sam, for adding your comment. Anybody else care to join us?

  3. I tried using my Wordpress identity but when I tried to post a comment it rudely demanded that I sign in and when I returned here my comment had fallen into the bit bucket. Email subscriptions only send to gmail accounts and I don't use gmail so I won't get alerts. DUMB!

  4. My suggestions and comments about the coming year:

    1) what you liked/appreciated about BGF in 2011-12?
I thought it had a good mix of pertinent and interesting topics, and good flexibility.

    2) what you did not like/appreciate about BGF in 2011-12?
Sometimes, some people tend to ramble on when they make comments or have questions. Maybe we can have a one or two minute kitchen timer?

    3) what changes would you suggest BGF make for 2011-12?
Concentrate on what each of us as individuals (or groups) can do to walk the walk more than talk the talk, and address the problem of getting more publicity. Maybe we should create a youtube channel and post videos of some of our meetings and discussions? Can anyone bring a camera to the picnic and shoot some clips?

    B. Please list below the topics you would want BGF to offer/include this coming year 2012-13?

    1) More about intentional communities
    2) Do It Yourself energy saving projects, such as electric car and tractor conversions, and the economics of hybrid and electric vehicles
    3) Music, poetry, books, and art relating to conservation and energy efficiency. Live performance, anyone? “Coffee House” format?
    4) What we can (and cannot) do politically. How effective are lobbying, letters, emails, petitions, protests, etc. Audience participation!
    5) How wild animals and pets can help us get in tune with nature and learn how to get along (pet friendly event? – can I bring Muttley?)
    6) Foraging, dumpster diving, reusing, recycling, repairing, and other survival and sustainable skills
    7) The next generation – what they will face, and how they can help
    8) Publicity – how we can get noticed and reach more people
    9) Third world and other countries: what they are doing, and how we can learn from and help each other (Mark Fisher?)

    C. Would you be willing to serve as a member of our BGF Planning Committee? Yes

    D. Would you be willing to make a presentation (name it, please) during one of our monthly BGF meetings? Yes
    Mostly (1), (2), (5), (6) and (9) above

  6. This is just a test post using my BGF-admin profile. These accounts get confusing...

  7. I will take the liberty of adding the recent emails about our upcoming planning meeting:

    ==========================================================
    Sam:
    1. Agenda: Let me volunteer the first item. It is my proposal for a speaker on Climate Change for September 23. He is Dr. Wilfred Candler, author of Global Warming: The Answer (The Energy Dividend). He is a friend and long time resident of Annapolis. I asked him today whether he would do it, if you all agreed. He said yes! So, if you agree, the pressure is off!! Will and I can give you the text for the description as soon as you want it. Then, tomorrow, we only have to plan for meetings starting October 28.

    2. Paul's offer to contact Lynn: Thanks for offering. Please do so.

    3. Background on Dr. Wilfred Candler:

    a. Ph.D. in Agricultural Science. Specialty has been agricultural economics. Now retired.

    b. Had academic positions in three different countries (Australia, New Zealand and U.S.)

    c. Worked also for Canadian government as agricultural economist

    d. Worked for World Bank for 25 years as an agricultural economist

    e. Has been studying the climate change problem AND solutions for many years. Unlike most speakers and writers on Climate Change he will offer practical solutions commensurate with the problem.

    f. Will has attended a BGF meeting and two Population Affinity Group meetings. So, at least some of you have met him.

    4. My vote for a lead for announcement of Sept. 23 meeting: (Have not asked Will what he thinks. Just made this up.)

"Did this summer's weather make you want to know more about Climate Change? The BGF Sept. meeting is your chance to get your questions answered and, especially, to learn what we should do, not just what we should fear."

Will has intermittently been tutoring me on climate change for about a year. It is more complicated than even some of us "greens" may realize -- even though we think we have already read enough about it. So, the system dynamics that determine climate are also more interesting than I ever realized. Will is very good at explaining it succinctly and with a light touch. At the same time he is passionate about his mission.

    Lore:

    Other items I propose

#2 - Who will contact the church to reserve the room and send in the contract?

#3 - Who will contact the THIRTEEN potential new co-sponsors/committee members/speakers and either
    a) invite them (via Doodle?) to a one-time planning meeting to plan out the calendar [RECOMMENDED?]
    OR
    b) just invite them to present (which means one person will have to coordinate emails to 13 different people [NOT RECOMMENDED?]

#4 - brainstorming 8 possible topics for the year.

    =======================================================
    Sam:
I volunteer to do #3a for a "one-time planning meeting" in September. I will use DOODLE to give all 13 AND our committee a choice of many dates in mid to late September. There is no need to make it earlier, if you accept my solution for the Sept. 23 BGF meeting.

  8. I took some notes during the meeting-
    1. Chose 3 different speakers for September, October and November. Dannielle will contact Food and Water Watch about their fracking campaign in September, also will contact national LCV and Sierra Club folks to possibly speak in October. Will Candler and Dan may speak as back-up at any of these meetings.
    2. Dan will sign the contract and reserve the room
    3. Lore will send around the contact information of 13 new co-sponsors. Sam will draft an invite letter. Dannielle will create a doodle and ultimately send final version of invite from baltimoregreenforum gmail. (Lore- can you email me the log-in information?)
    4. We will meet again in September- after Labor Day on a weekday evening.

Add any notes you all see fit! Thanks!
